This Handbook reproduces the text of the Insurance Ordinance and all relevant subsidiary legislation as currently in force and includes amendment notes, carefully researched case authorities, expert commentary, key definitions, and other authoritative material presented in a clear and succinct style. In addition, cross-references are made to subsidiary legislation and to tables and forms where necessary. This Handbook will be an essential companion for lawyers, businesspersons, in-house counsel, academics, and all those who are engaged with or interested in insurance law in Hong Kong.

Apart from updates on recent case authorities since June 2020, including updated authorities on the application of section 24 of the Insurance Ordinance, this second edition also provides an important overview of the most recent reform in July 2023 by the Insurance (Amendment) Ordinance 2023, which introduces a new risk-based assessment regime for insurance companies in Hong Kong. The amendments are due to take effect in 2024.

About the Author

Arthur Poon

Arthur is a Bar Scholar. He joined Chambers in 2021 upon completion of his pupillage with Mr. Joseph Tse SC, Mr. Christopher Chain, Ms. Sabrina Ho, and Mr. Justin Lam. He practices in all areas of Chambers’ work, with an emphasis on civil and commercial matters. Prior to joining Chambers, Arthur graduated first in class from the University of Hong Kong in 2018, reading Bachelor of Social Sciences (Government and Laws) and Bachelor of Laws. As a visiting student of Gonville and Caius College in 2017, he obtained first class results in all subjects in Law Tripos Part II at the University of Cambridge. Upon graduation, he further obtained his BCL at the University of Oxford with Distinction in all subjects, and his PCLL at the University of Hong Kong with Distinction.

Sabrina Ho

Sabrina practises in all areas of civil work, with an emphasis on commercial, company and insurance law.

Sabrina is a member of the Hong Kong Election Committee (Legal Sector), a member of the Competition Commission appointed by the Chief Executive, and a member of the Standing Committee on Company Law Reform appointed by the Financial Secretary.

Sabrina is a member of the List of Arbitrators of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and a member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration. She is a director of eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre Limited.

Fluent in Mandarin and written Chinese, Sabrina has been involved in various complex court cases and arbitrations involving Mainland corporations and individuals. She is the Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong and Mainland Legal Profession Association. She is the secretary of the Standing Committee on Mainland Affairs of the Hong Kong Bar Association.
