The Planning Act 2008 introduced a totally new regime to obtain consent for developments for nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPs) such as rail, roads, power stations, airport related development, dams and reservoirs etc. This represents a radical new statutory based process and a fundamental change in the way major development is authorised in the UK and will require a complete overhaul of the present procedure and practices.

The powers of the Secretary of State will be increased so that the government can speed up the planning process to pass infrastructure projects such as plans for the third runway at Heathrow.
