“This book has the potential to become a major source of reference concerning Education Law in Malaysia. It acts as a significant reference for all stakeholders involved in education.”

Professor Dr Jan De Groof

Education law impacts a wide cross-section of society, be they students, parents, teachers, school principals, administrators or policy-makers. It involves many distinct areas of law including tort, contract, trusts, criminal law, civil procedure, constitutional law and administrative law. It is also very practical in nature, involving day-to-day scenarios and issues which take place in schools around the country.

This is an extremely readable and practical book written by an author who has been trained in the fields of education and law. It has been prepared based on the author’s long and valuable experience to address the multitude of issues which arise. Regular reference is made to applicable case law, legislation and directives of the Ministry of Education. Where an emerging issue has yet to be resolved by the Malaysian court system, experience overseas has been brought in to aid discussion and to point the possible way forward.

Education Law in Malaysia: Principles and Practice looks at topics like duty of care and negligence, supervision in class and during outdoor activities, legal rights of students, student discipline, corporal punishment, misappropriation of school funds, management of school trust property, contractual obligations of schools and students, assessment of damages and legal status of teachers.

This is a book which must be read by teachers, school administrators, students, parents and their legal advisers. It should be available for ready reference in every school and every public library in Malaysia.
