Major developments are afoot and will be tracked and analysed by the Encyclopedia during the coming months, particularly following announcements about the re-shaping of the statutory framework within which public and environmental health operates:

• The Health and Social Care Bill when enacted will be fully annotated where it affects the subject matter of the Encyclopedia
• More immediately, the Localism Act 2011 will have significant impacts locally in relation to decision-making which has an impact on environmental health. The operation of this new regime will be tracked by the Encyclopedia
• Also appearing in 2012 are the changes to waste reduction schemes introduced by the Act of 2011 through amendments to the Climate Change Act 2008
• Other major legislation to be covered in 2012 is the Public Bodies Act 2011 which introduces a variety of new provisions governing the environment in Wales, as well as giving Welsh ministers extended powers in this area
• Throughout 2012 there is likely to be further progress in relation to flood and water management as the Flood and Water Management Act is brought further into force. Considerable amounts of new secondary legislation will be included in the Encyclopedia accompanied by appropriate cross references
• Building control and its regulatory control will continue to evolve and any changes will be fully incorporated in the Encyclopedia. Additionally, Circulars affecting the operation of building control will continue to be added to the work
• The Sunbeds (Regulation) Act is another new item of legislation to be included in the Encyclopedia, fully annotated
• Throughout 2012 a number of other areas of environmental health are likely to see legislative developments, not least air quality, the regulation of scrap metal dealers, and achievement of the target of a zero waste economy

The Encyclopedia will also continue to report on and include references in the appropriate annotations to new cases in the fields of statutory nuisance, dangerous dogs, and environmental information.
