Foundations of International Law seeks to explain and illustrate the cardinal concepts of international law, providing students and practitioners with a sound grasp of the subject area’s structure and systemic requirements. The book brings clarity to international law that is occasionally missing from some specialist works, and a comprehensiveness which is always missing from basic introductions. It is unique in that it is written for a specifically Hong Kong readership.

The second edition is updated and revised to incorporate the most recent developments in international law across a wide range of areas. Recent decisions from the International Court of Justice and other international and domestic tribunals have been added. The chapter on international law in Hong Kong law has been revised to incorporate recent developments. It also includes entirely new sections on the responsibility to protect, terrorism, the crime of aggression, mens rea and general defences in international criminal law.

Professor Stephen Hall

Professor Stephen Hall was a member of the Faculty of Law at the University of New South Wales for six years where he was also Director of the European Law Centre. He has been admitted as a barrister and solicitor in Australia, and practised law with the Australian Attorney-General's Department for nine years mainly in the areas of administrative law and judicial review. He was foundation director of the Juris Doctor (JD) programme at the City University of Hong Kong and is foundation director of the JD and JD/MBA programmes at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Hall's areas of research and teaching interest are: the traditions of the Natural Law and the Common Law, International Law, European Union Law, and Contract Law.
