Brian J. Colandreo is a partner and the Boston Patent Practice Leader at Holland & Knight LLP. Mr. Colandreo has a Bachelors of Science Degree in electrical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Juris Doctor and Master’s in Intellectual Property Degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center. He is currently an adjunct intellectual property professor at Franklin Pierce Law Center and often judges intellectual property moot court competitions. Douglas C. Doskocil is a partner in the litigation department of Goodwin Procter LLP, and is based in Boston. His practice concentrates on intellectual property litigation, with particular emphasis on patents relating to electrical systems, semiconductor fabrication, computers, communication networks, and software. He also serves as an instructor for Goodwin Procter’s in-house patent training program. In addition, he provides advice to clients in pre-litigation matters such as long-term intellectual property enforcement strategies and tactics for avoiding litigation. Mr. Doskocil co-chairs the litigation committee of the Boston Patent Law Association, is an active member of the Sigma Xi Research Society, the American Intellectual Property Association’s Practice in the Far East committee, and the Association of Old Crows, and was a founding member of the Boston College Intellectual Property Inns of Court. Stephen J. Driscoll is a partner with Saul Ewing LLP. He is a registered patent attorney and specializes in intellectual property counseling and strategic planning for the software, telecommunications, fiber optics, and chemical sectors. He also has experience in patent procurement, licensing/transactional matters, and litigation and enforcement of patents and other intellectual property. His practice is informed by his background as a chemical engineer and work experience in electronics and digital control with Reliance Electric before entering law school. A unique aspect of Mr. Driscoll’s practice is functioning as an outsourced in-house patent counsel. He works closely, on-site, with small, mid-sized, and some large companies that do not have intellectual property departments. In this role, he has managed patent portfolios, worked with product development teams to secure intellectual property in emerging markets, performed clearance searches, mapped third-party intellectual property rights to guide research and development efforts, and negotiated various contracts including non-disclosure agreements, licenses, joint development agreements, and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency agreements (and European equivalents). He is also experienced in leveraging intellectual property to generate revenue and enhance competiveness. In a more traditional role, Mr. Driscoll routinely counsels clients on patentability, infringement, validity, and freedom to operate issues. He has also performed numerous due diligence studies, involving analysis of large patent portfolios to determine their strength and validity, evaluation of competitive products, and assessment of design-around potential. He also represents clients in the procurement of intellectual property, drafting hundreds of patents and patent applications in various technologies including chemical, fiber optics, software/computer, telecommunications, and mechanical/medical devices.
Valerie K. Friedrich Ph.D. is a partner with Baker & McKenzie LLP. She practices in all areas of intellectual property law, with an emphasis on U.S. and foreign patent procurement and multinational patent portfolio management. She has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications relating to chemical compositions and processes, pharmaceutical compositions, medical equipment, semiconductor devices and processes, and consumer products. Dr. Friedrich devotes a significant part of her practice to client counseling, including freedom to operate and non-infringement/invalidity analyses. She has issued numerous formal legal opinions related to invalidity and/or non-infringement in the fields of chemicals, including specialty chemicals and fuels, chemical processes, semiconductor manufacturing processes, and consumer products. She has also managed freedom to operate analyses of large patent portfolios. Dr. Friedrich also has extensive experience in intellectual property licensing and due diligence issues. As former Associate General Counsel of Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Friedrich drafted, reviewed, and approved numerous licenses, including outbound licenses of college technology as well as inbound licenses of research tools to be used by college personnel. In addition, she has participated in infringement litigation involving patents, trademarks, and trade secrets in both federal and state courts. Prior to embarking on her legal career, Dr. Friedrich was a research chemist with the fabricated products department of DuPont, working with development of original equipment manufacturer and consumer products. She also worked as a process research chemist for Rohm and Haas in the field of monomer production. She is an Adjunct Professor of patent prosecution at the University of Houston Law Center. Dr. Friedrich attended the University of Houston Law Center (J.D., magna cum laude, 1994), the University of California at Los Angeles (Ph.D., 1988), and the University of Texas at Austin (B.S., 1983).
Gregory A. Nelson is a shareholder at the law firm of Akerman Senterfitt and chair of the intellectual property practice group. He received his B.S., Ch.E., and J.D. from the University of Florida. He is admitted to the Florida and Illinois Bars and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Nelson represents clients in all phases of patent, trademark, and copyright law, including prosecution, licensing, and litigation. His clients include a number of universities and Fortune 100 companies, whom he assists in developing patent strategies related to biotechnology, chemistry and materials science, and computer and Internet technology. He is a certified licensing professional, as recognized by the Licensing Executives Society. He is a founding member and past chair of the Florida chapter of the Licensing Executives Society, and he is a frequent lecturer, panelist, and moderator on intellectual property topics.
Wayne O. Stacy is a partner in the Cooley Godward Kronish LLP Litigation department and a member of the Intellectual Property Litigation and Patent Counseling and Prosecution practice groups. His practice focuses on patent litigation, with particular emphasis on software patent litigation. He has recently litigated patents involving database systems, geo-location software, educational software, e-commerce systems, communication management software, interactive voice recognition systems, and gaming software. His litigation experience also extends into the electronics fields, where he has litigated patents involving microcontrollers, medical devices, power supplies, thin film deposition systems, semiconductor laser components, and cable industry equipment. Mr. Stacy is a frequent speaker on patent litigation and patent prosecution topics. He was also an editor for the intellectual property column of the Colorado Lawyer and is an organizer for one of Colorado’s leading legal education events, the Rocky Mountain Intellectual Property Institute. Mr. Stacy received his B.S. in computer engineering, cum laude, from Southern Methodist University. He received his law degree, with high honors, from George Washington University, where he served on the Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He also served as an extern for the Honorable Judge Rader of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Stacy is ranked by Chambers USA as one of Colorado’s top patent lawyers. He is also an adjunct professor of law at the University of Colorado School of Law and the University of Denver School of Law, where he teaches patent and copyright law.
Doreen Yatko Trujillo is a member at Cozen O’Connor PC. She specializes in intellectual property and has assisted all types of clients, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, in intellectual property matters, particularly in the area of biotechnology. She assists clients in obtaining and maintaining patents, both domestically and internationally. She assists clients in defending their patents, and in challenging the patents of others, both in the courts and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
