ICSA approved study text for Level 1 module Health Service Governance (for November 2012 exams onwards)

The ‘Health Service Governance’ module is part of the Chartered Secretaries Qualifying Scheme and can be taken as an option in place of ‘Corporate Governance’. The module is for those acting as secretaries to the board within trusts or other NHS organisations. It covers the development of governance in the health service context, the codes of conduct and laws which apply to the NHS, the practical aspects of boardroom and governance practice, risk management and internal control.

The CSQS texts produced by ICSA cover the full syllabus for each module and are clearly structured to help in planning a programme of study. Learning outcomes whcih are linked to the syllabus are presented for each part, and each chapter follows a standard format.

The texts also include a range of features to encourage active learning and to help students to apply principles and theory to real-life business situations.

About the Author

Claire Lea: Claire has extensive experience both in the NHS and the private sector as a company secretary. She is a qualified Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and has previously worked in the pensions and merchant banking professions, the third sector and is currently working within the NHS. Reviews

"Claire has captured the complexity of governance within the NHS in a way that is accessible and understandable, without losing the nuances of what it takes to lead and direct an NHS organisation.  She has given a clear explanation of commissioner and provider roles in their current form and as they will be once the Health and Social Care Act comes into force.  She has set out the way regulation operates within the sector and provided relevant case studies to illustrate the way the system works.   The NHS provider role and the distinction between NHS trusts and NHS foundation trusts are explained comprehensively."
