Wolfgang E. Burhenne is the ICEL Executive Governor, as well as Legal Adviser to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources - IUCN. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Environmental Policy and Law," and is also responsible for the "Environmental Notes for Parliamentarians" in English and French, distributed under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
He is the recipient of the 1976 Elizabeth Haub Prize and Gold Medal of the Université Libre de Bruxelles, as well as the United Nations International Environmental Prize, together with the Françoise Burhenne-Guilmin (awarded by the UN Secretary General Peres de Cuellar through the Executive Direction of UNEP) in 1991, and the Honorary member of the International Alpine Commission in 1992.
Dr. Burhenne also became the third recipient of the German Alpine Prize on 25 November, 2011 for service as cofounder and first General Secretary of the international mountain conservation organization “CIPRA,” as well as for longtime engagementin the field of international environmental conservation. Furthermore, he was the second recipient of the Harold Jefferson Coolidge Medal, which is one of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resource’s (IUCN) highest Awards. The medal is presented every four years on the occasion of IUCN’s World Conservation Congress “to recognize an individual who has made internationally significant contributions to effective conservation, and whose conservation efforts embody Dr. Coolidge’s approach and achievements….” The next such World Conservation Congress will take place from 6-15 September, 2012 in Jeju (Republic of Korea).
The International Council of Environmental Law (ICEL) is an association of elected environmental law and policy experts from all regions of the earth. ICEL’s legal seat is in Geneva; its Bureau of the Council of Governors is in Bonn, where it edits its journal "Environmental Policy & Law" and other publications. ICEL regularly advises the UN and other international organizations. Through its representation at most official international meetings and its extensive archives, ICEL assembles the documents which are then edited for inclusion in Oceana’s current series. ICEL and the Université Libre de Bruxelles annually confer the Elizabeth Haub Award for exceptional accomplishments in the field of environmental law.
