About the Author

Howard C Anawalt

Anawalt is an attorney and legal writer in Silicon Valley. For many years he was a Professor of Law at Santa Clara University Law School, where he taught Protection of IP, Computer Law, Copyright, and Constitutional Law. He continues to conduct research and write extensively in the area of intellectual property. His legal practice has included transactional work as well as litigation, and he has provided counsel for individual inventors and many companies, large and small, in Silicon Valley.

Professor Anawalt is a graduate of Stanford University (B.A. 1960) and the University of California (Boalt Hall, J.D. 1964). He is a member of the bars of the states of California and Washington and of the US Supreme Court. Professor Anawalt has been a visiting scholar at Boalt Hall, Stanford, and most recently at the University of Washington, where he was associated with the Center for Advanced Study and Research on Intellectual Property. He initiated the High Tech Program at Santa Clara University, and for a number of years served as its Director. Professor Anawalt has been Chair for the Computer Law Section of the Santa Clara County Bar Association, and has made numerous practical presentations on intellectual property to US and foreign attorneys, inventors, and entrepreneurs.

In recent years, Professor Anawalt has conducted IP seminars and presentations in England, Denmark, Sweden, Austria and Japan. In 2000, he served as a Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Intellectual Property of Japan, and in 2003 he served as the coach of the only American team to enter the Jean Pictet International Humanitarian Law Competition sponsored by the International Red Cross in Italy.

Professor Anawalt and his wife, Susan, live in Monte Sereno, California. They have enjoyed the special opportunity of spending the better part of four summers in Japan, where he directed the summer law school program for Santa Clara University and lectured on IP.
