About the Author

The Hon Mr. Justice Bryan M.E. McMahon, retired Judge of the High Court, BCL, LLB, LLM (Harvard), Ph D, LLD (honoris causa University College Dublin, 2012), Professor of Law at University College Cork until 1987 when he retired to become a Senior Partner in the firm of Houlihan McMahon, Ennis, County Clare and part time Professor of Law at NUIG. Formerly Chair of many public bodies including The Crime Forum (1999), The National Archives Advisory Council and The Irish University Quality Board. Currently, Chairman of the Abbey Theatre and of the Governing Body of University College Cork.

William Binchy is a practising barrister. He was Special Legal Advisor to the Irish Department of Justice (1974–1976), Research Counsellor to the Law Reform Commission (1976–1992), Regius Professor of Laws, Trinity College Dublin (1992–2012), Commissioner, Irish Human Rights Commission (2001–2011), Visiting Fellow, Corpus Christi College Cambridge (Michaelmas term, 2002) and Visiting Fellow, Institute of European and Comparative Law, Oxford (June, 2011).
