This book brings together and explains the law in Macau relating to business activities. The reader will find a wide variety of topics covered, with solid introductions to the conceptual frameworks and practical and concise exposition of their regulation.

The book focuses on a number of areas of private law: general theory of civil law, the law of obligations in general and contracts in particular, property law, and commercial law. It also includes a general introduction covering fundamental legal concepts as understood in Macau in the tradition of civil law legal systems, with reference to most branches of law including the constitutional framework. It also covers the legal transformations and continuities arising from the resumption of sovereignty by China in 1999.

This is the first publication providing an extended account of the matters covered in the 1999 Civil and Commercial Codes. To ensure that all relevant information is conveniently available, substantial tracts of the Codes are provided in the appendices in new English translations by the author.

The “localisation” of the Macau legal system has eased the language problem for those fluent in Chinese, but it remains true that most key doctrinal materials are written in Portuguese. Jorge AF Godinho, LLB (Lisbon) LLM (Macau); Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Macau; formerly Legal Advisor, Legal Affairs Department of Macau and Monetary Authority of Macau

Jorge Godinho is a Portuguese national based in Macau. He has held legal advisory posts with the Government of Macau from 1991 to 1998 and taught business law and other subjects at the University of Macau since 1993. He has a long list of multilingual publications on the law, and is the translator from Portuguese to English of the Macau Commercial Code 1999.
