Details

The book personifies the richness of the Malaysian judiciary in terms of history. It also bears testimony to the wealth of talent indigenous to the country, seemingly innate but ready to rise to the occasion, if so willed. It traces the changes in personnel and structure from the appointment of John Dickens in 1801 as the first Magistrate of Penang in 1801 to the appointment of Tan Sri Mohamad Dzaiddin Abdullah as Chief Justice of Malaysia in December of 2000.

The book contains text and pictures that reminds us of the past, be it achievements or times that remind us of the many competing forces that shape a nation's destiny. It is also a record of an important part played by luminaries, past and present, from a myriad of cultures, which have helped to mould a unique judicial system. Justice Dato' James Foong, in this labour of love, has interwoven records of commentary and pictures in an engaging manner to help the readers capture the many moments in the evolution of the Malaysian judiciary.

The first edition was published nine years ago. In this second edition, new chapters have been added to record the significant events that have since unfolded. "The Difficult Period" well reflects the tumultuous history of the judiciary to date, and the publication ends on a positive note with a chapter aptly named "A Hopeful Beginning".
