Details

The Subordinate Courts are responsible for the sentencing of the vast majority of criminal offenders in Singapore. As with the first edition of Sentencing Practice in the Subordinate Courts, this book deals with the range of offences commonly prosecuted in the Subordinate Courts.

Three new offences have been included in this second edition: contravention of personal protection order under s 65 of the Women’s Charter (Cap 353), giving false information to an immigration officer under s 57(1)(k) of the Immigration Act (Cap 133) and driving a heavy vehicle without a permit or in breach of conditions of permit under s 79 of the Road Traffic Act (Cap 276). The organisation of the book is unchanged in this edition except for some re-ordering of material. Certain material from the first edition which is of peripheral relevance has been omitted.

The significant new cases include: PP v Ng Kwok Soon (life imprisonment), PP v Mohamed Noor bin Abdul Majeed (reformative training), G Ravichander v PP (corrective training), PP v Perumal s/o Suppiah and Tan Ngin Hai v PP (preventive detention), Leaw Siat Chong v PP and Soong Hee Sin v PP (mitigating factors), Loh Kok Siew v PP (commencement of sentence), Lim Poh Tee v PP (parity of sentencing), Sivakumar s/o Rajoo v PP (special reasons), Tay Kim Kuan v PP (carnal connection), PP v Chong Siew Chin (maid abuse), Chua Tiong Tiong v PP (corruption), Cheng Siah Johnson v PP (consumption of ketamine), PP v Ng Tai Tee Janet & Anor v PP (abetment of cheating by personation), PP v Diki Zulkarnaini bin Saini (rioting), PP v Yap Kok Foy (extortion), Abu Syeed Chowdhury v PP (giving false information to an immigration officer), Soh Lip Hwa v PP (employing an immigration offender), Ang Jwee Herng v PP (harbouring an immigration offender), PP v Masrani bin Hassan (failure to render assistance and failure to stop).
