Details

This work examines the risks that are associated with psychiatric disorders and promotes an understanding of the relevant concepts to a non-specialist audience.

This work examines the risks that are associated with psychiatric disorders and demonstrates both the possibilities and the limitations of psychiatric risk assessment.
The term ‘risk assessment’ is customarily taken to mean the evaluation of the risk of aggression or other untoward behaviour that has a major influence in situations concerning, for example, family and child practice and the criminal law. However, the alternative meaning attributable to the term, namely the risk of occurrence of mental disorder, which has substantial implications for personal injury law and employment law is also addressed in detail. As mental disorder is now acknowledged to be so widespread (and underdiagnosed), its effects are to be felt in all areas of life.

Risk Assessment in Psychiatry: A Guide for Lawyers is essential reading for lawyers in various fields of specialisation (criminal, family, employment and personal injury law), social workers, probation officers, occupational health professionals and those working within insurance.

About the Author

B Mahendra, Consultant Psychiatrist and Barrister, London

Reviews

"Mahendra presents information in a relatively jargon-free manner. A consultant psychiatrist and barrister, he has an excellent grasp of the connections between medicine and the law, and guides the reader through a tricky and technical area with relatively little recourse to unfamiliar terms. The book concentrates on presenting information that will place the lawyer, social worker or health professional in a strong position to understand not only the risks of psychiatric disorders, but also how to mitigate those risks"
In-House Lawyer

"The first part ... useful for those who have little knowledge of psychiatry, with an introduction to diagnostic terms. The second part ... considered the core of the book, forms around a quarter of its pages and addresses the practical application of risk assessment in a range of settings ... a useful book for those wishing for a general introduction to psychiatric terms"
