About the Author

Ann M. Catino
 
Ann M. Catino chairs the environmental and land use practice group at Halloran & Sage LLP. She counsels clients in transactional, permitting, and compliance under federal and state environmental laws, including site investigation, cleanup, and development, Brownfield redevelopment, air and water pollution, hazardous waste compliance, solid waste management, water pollution control, and discharge and diversion laws. She also has represented clients involved in agency enforcement matters, both at the agency and in court, and has extensive experience litigating Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act claims and cost recovery actions filed in court. Ms. Catino has served as co-chair of the state’s Brownfields Task Force since its inception in 2006, and she is leading the initiative on brownfield reform in the state. She also serves a vice chair of the environmental section of the Connecticut Bar Association. She was recently appointed to the Connecticut Women’s Council. She has been a “Connecticut Super Lawyer” for the past two years and was featured in the first “Women in the Law” edition of the Connecticut Law Tribune in 2008. She is the author of numerous articles and a frequent speaker on issues involving environmental regulatory matters, real estate development, and liability. She also has served as a commentator on local radio and television programs on brownfields and land use topics. Ms. Catino graduated from St. Anselm College in 1982. She holds a master’s degree in public administration from the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and she received her J.D. in 1987 from the University of Kentucky, where she was executive editor of the Journal of Mineral Law and Policy.
 
William S. Cox
 
William S. Cox III is a member of Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC. He attended the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a member of the editorial board of the Virginia Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. After graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law, he began his environmental and toxic torts practice Latham & Watkins. He joined Lightfoot, Franklin & White in 1990 shortly after it was founded and is admitted to practice in all Alabama state and federal courts, the Eleventh Circuit, the D.C. Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is an active member of the Birmingham Bar Association and the Alabama Bar Association. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and the Defense Research Institute. He often speaks to local, state, and national groups on a variety of environmental law topics. He is recognized in the Best Lawyers in America for Alabama for his environmental law and water law practices.
 
David E. Cranston
 
David E. Cranston chairs the environmental department at Greenberg Glusker LLP. He also heads the firm’s climate change and sustainability practice group. The majority of his practice relates to environmental issues and disputes not only in the Los Angeles area, but also throughout California and the country. His clients include Fortune 500 Companies, trade associations, public entities, and small businesses. His practice focuses on the litigation of complex environmental disputes, including environmental cost recovery litigation, environmental insurance coverage litigation, and air quality regulatory matters and litigation. His practice also emphasizes air quality and climate change issues, including regulatory development, enforcement actions, permitting, emission offsets and trading, and Clean Air Act citizen suits and other litigation. He also advises real estate investors and developers in connection with the acquisition and redevelopment of properties impacted by environmental contamination. Mr. Cranston has authored a number of articles and other publications. He is a contributing editor for the California Environmental Law Reporter. He has been a speaker at numerous seminars and conferences related to environmental litigation. He is a member of the California State and American Bar Associations and their respective environmental sections. He is also a member of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel. He has been recognized as one of the “World’s Leading Environment Lawyers” by LegalMedia Group in London. He was also recognized as a “Southern California Super Lawyer” in environmental law in 2009. He graduated from San Diego State University in 1981 and U.C. Davis School of Law in 1985.
 
Carollyn B. Lobell
 
Carollyn B. Lobell is a partner with Nossaman LLP, where she focuses on compliance, counseling, permitting, and litigation. She has three decades of experience shepherding public works and private development projects through the environmental compliance process to completion. She has comprehensive experience with the practical applications of state and federal environmental laws, from the California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act to air quality and wetlands regulations. She has developed successful overarching environmental strategies and practical solutions for defensible environmental impact reports, permitting, Native American consultation, legislation, and litigation support. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Lobell spent more than twenty years as an environmental consultant, drafting and managing environmental impact documents and processes. She received her J.D., cum laude, in 2000 from Whittier Law School.
 
Diane W. Whitney
 
Diane W. Whitney is a partner in Pullman & Comley LLC. Her practice is largely devoted to environmental matters, toxic torts, and land use, and it includes litigation and appellate work across the country in state and federal courts. She is admitted to practice in Connecticut, the First and Second Circuits, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court. She is a graduate of William Smith College, with a master’s degree from Colgate University and a J.D. from the University of Connecticut.
