Globalization has created a demand for attorneys who are licensed to practice law in multiple jurisdictions. This guide provides an overview of the bar admissions process in various jurisdictions around the globe, a process that is modeled after that generally used in the United States. For each jurisdiction, the authors tried to provide information on the issues of language, educational requirements, character and fitness, traineeship requirements, challenges facing foreign applicants, reciprocity, and where to find additional information or who to contact about the bar admissions process.

This valuable tool is a reference guide that consolidates the information compiles into one volume for easy access. Information from more than 50 countries is included.

The ABA Guide to International Bar Admissions provides an overview of the bar admissions process in the jurisdictions covered in this book. The process is modeled after that generally used in the United States. For each jurisdiction, we have tried to provide information on the issues of language, educational requirements, character and fitness, traineeship requirements, challenges facing foreign applicants, reciprocity, and where to find additional information or who to contact about the bar admissions process. Where the terms “U.S.” and “foreign” are used, they should be treated interchangeably, unless otherwise stated.

This book is not intended to be a guide to foreign attorneys seeking admission to a bar in an American jurisdiction. Nor is it intended to provide legal advice regarding the successful completion of the bar admissions process in any particular jurisdiction. Rather, this book is to be a reference guide that consolidates this information into one place and facilitates the location of information for readers. The editors, the contributors, the ABA Section of International Law, the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, and the American Bar Association make no representations or warranties as to the accuracy of this information at the time of publication. As you will see, the bar admissions process is not uniform, and in some jurisdictions, admission is limited to certain individuals, usually based on nationality. If you are a potential applicant to a particular jurisdiction and you believe you need legal counsel regarding the bar admissions process in that jurisdiction, then you should contact an attorney in that jurisdiction who is competent in the area of bar admissions for legal advice.
