As such it maps the complex regulatory environment in which the legal profession in England and Wales now operates. It opens with a critical overview of professional ideals, organisation, power and culture and an examination of the mechanisms of professions, exercised through governance, regulation, discipline and education. The core of the book explores the conflict between duties owed to clients (loyalty and confidentiality) and wider duties (to the profession, third parties and society). The final part applies lawyers' ethics to dispute resolution and settlement (litigation, negotiation, advocacy and alternative dispute settlement). Now laid out in a more accessible format and written in a more approachable style, the book is ideal reading for those teaching and learning in the field of legal ethics.

About the Author

Andrew Boon is Professor of Law at the City Law School, City University London. Before joining City he was Dean of the School of Law at the University of Westminster, London. He has served on the Law Society's Training Framework Review Group and as Vice-Chair of the Bar Standards Board's Education and Training Committee. He was recently consultant to the Law Society of England and Wales on introducing legal ethics to the compulsory curriculum for undergraduates and to the Solicitors Regulation Authority on the mandatory scheme for continuing professional development. He was recently a director of the International Association of Legal Ethics and is a Convenor of the Lawyers and Legal Professions stream for the Socio-Legal Studies Association Annual Conference.
