The Standard Form of building Contract was first introduced in 1980 by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA). Since its launch, there have been several amendments, reprints and editions, the latest at the time of writing being the 6th Edition which was issued in 1999.

The purpose of the book is to assist practitioners in appreciating and understanding the meaning and implications of the contract provisions and the procedural mechanisms prescribed. The clause-by-clause commentary gives a practical insight and a detailed analysis of the provisions with reference to relevant legal cases in both local and foreign jurisdictions, and more importantly, the particular court rulings decided based on this standard form. For ease of reference, the book incorporates the SIA Standard Forms for Lump Sum Contract and Measurement Contract as appendices at the end of the book.
