About the Author

S. Timothy Kochis is the Chief Executive Officer and Principal of Kochis Fitz, a wealth management firm located in San Francisco and Menlo Park, California. 

Kochis is a former National Director of Personal Financial Planning for both Deloitte & Touche (1985-1991) and Bank of America (1981-1985). He currently serves as the Chairman-elect of the Board of Governors of the Foundation for Financial Planning. He serves on the nine-member Board of Directors of the Financial Planning Standards Board, the newly established governing board for the financial planning profession worldwide.  

He is a Director (Hon.) of the Japanese Academic Society for Financial Planning and the Past-Chairman of the International Certified Financial Planner Council. Kochis is a Past-President of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards and Past-Chairman of its Board of Examiners. He was responsible for supervising the creation of the examination now used throughout the profession to qualify CFP candidates. In addition, he was a Co-founder, Chairman of the Advisory Board and Instructor of the U.C. Berkeley Personal Financial Planning Program, one of the first accredited financial planning programs in the United States.

In recognition of his contributions and achievements, Kochis was named Financial Planner of the Year in 1987 by the San Francisco chapter of the International Association for Financial Planning. He has been included in Worth Magazine's list of the country's Best Financial Advisers each year since the list was initially published in 1994. Kochis is frequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and other publications.He is a member of the Advisory Board of the CCH Financial and Estate Planning reporter and is a sought-after speaker for financial and investment forums throughout the world.  

Kochis earned an undergraduate degree from Marquette University. He earned a law degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, including a tour of duty in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart for wounds received in action.
