This title provides a detailed discussion of the legal framework for international economic cooperation within ASEAN and the status of ASEAN as a legal entity distinct from its underlying membership. The text also addresses the decision-making powers of ASEAN; the multilateral, regional, and bilateral framework for trade and investment; the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA); and GATT. Topics include preferential trading arrangements, external relations, nontariff barriers, joint ventures, and tariff preferences.

Paul J. Davidson

Paul J. Davidson, B.Eng., LL.B., LL.M., Ph.D. is a professor in the Department of Law, Carleton University where he teaches international economic law. He is a barrister and solicitor and member of the Bar of the Province of Ontario. He has published in the area of trade and investment, particularly in regards to Southeast Asia and APEC. He is chair of the Carleton Committee on Asian Studies (CAS), and an associate of the APEC Study Centre in Canada.

Professor Davidson has been a visiting fellow at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, and a research fellow in Canada-Southeast Asia Relations at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore. In addition, he has lectured in China on various aspects of Canadian law and international economic law.
