What approaches are organisations using to deliver coaching? How can the coaching relationship best be supported? Who should deliver coaching, and what development will they need? And how do you assess the effectiveness of coaching initiatives?

This report presents the findings of CIPD research into coaching provision in UK organisations. Undertaken with Ashridge Centre for Coaching, the research took a multi-method approach including the use of in-depth case studies, interviews with coaching experts, survey research, and insights from an inquiry group sharing knowledge and experiences of coaching in their own organisations.

In seeking to understand the development of coaching capability within organisations, the research explored the set of goals, roles and relationships, processes, development activities and evaluation approaches that make up the coaching system.

The report identifies challenges around:
- matching coaching structure to organisation need, culture and context
- tension between the personal and organisational dimensions of coaching
- the evolution of coaching in an organisation, from introduction to establishment
- the key choices to be made in shaping the coaching offer.
